Who are you going to captain in FPL GW2? With Aguero not sure if he is fit enough to start, Hazard coming from a quiet match and Rooney somewhat unimpressive as well it is not easy to find a suitable captain choice. Benteke has a decent matchup at home against Bournemouth but he might need some more time to fit in Liverpool team. Sanchez came in for Arsenal, maybe a bit unplanned in a loss to West Ham, but is he fit to start against Crystal Palace. How about Walcott? Is he going to start up front after being left on the bench in the opening match? There are plenty of uncertainties which make our FPL GW2 captaincy choice a really tough one.
Top 3 FPL GW2 Captain prospects
With all of the above, it would be advisable to go with a proven player that seems to be in form. We chose 3 players that are certain to start, have favourable matchups and which could hopefully return solid FPL points. Here is our list of top 3 FPL GW2 captaincy choices.
Graziano Pelle
The Italian started new Premier League season in a good manner, scoring an opening goal for his team. His team welcomes Everton in a Gameweek 2 and this seems to be good opportunity for him to score again. Everton allowed two goals to a newly promoted Watford at home and it is highly unlikely they will keep a clean sheet now. They have problems with injuries, newest one is a huge blow with Baines being out for 3 or more months. Southampton has their fair share of problems in defence as well. That is why I expect them to score more goals this BPL season, as they are unlikely to repeat their defensive performances from last season. Pelle should be key man for their ambitions. Although Tadic, Mane and Rodriguez all look dangerous as well, Pelle is our captain choice from Southampton.
Wayne Rooney
Rooney wasn’t particularly impressive against Tottenham but he is United’s main man in attack and he is safe to start. His record against Aston Villa is amazing and although he played best at Old Trafford, I like him to do some damage at Villa Park as well. There is plenty of talent behind him in the likes of Mata and Depay. Mata is further away from the goal and Depay might need some more time in Man Utd jersey and is more like a gamble pick for captain. He looked very lively in a Spurs match, but didn’t return any extra FPL points and actually had BPS score of 0. If you think Man Utd will leave with all of the points today, Rooney is most likely to make it happen.
Harry Kane
Harry Kane didn’t start new BPL season on the highest note, but it wasn’t really expected for him to score at Old Trafford. He did look dangerous at times, but in this Gameweek he will get a better opportunity to score, when Stoke comes to White Hart Lane. Stoke has problems in defence with Shawcross out and it will be hard for them to keep a clean sheet. They almost managed that against Liverpool at home of it wasn’t for fabulous Coutinho strike late in the match. However do note that Liverpool didn’t create as many chances as Tottenham should at home. Kane is a sure starter and a decent GW2 FPL captain choice. If you need an alternative in Spurs team, you could consider Chadli. He was all over the place against Man Utd and he has a decent goalscoring record in last season. He is the one I would recommend for a GW2 captain after Kane in Spurs team.
Other FPL GW2 captain choices to consider
Christian Benteke
Although Coutinho stole the show in a narrow win on Sunday, Benteke is the main attacking weapon for Liverpool. Reds will likely create more chances at home against Bournemouth than they did at Stoke. Benteke will try hard to impress home crowd in his début at Anfield. He has what it takes to score. Coutinho has seen his price rise and may very well be worth it but he shouldn’t be scoring goals on the regular basis. He has that killer pass to feed the attackers but that is only a reason more to trust in Benteke. Coutinho was not consistent in the last season and my first pick for FPL GW2 captain from Liverpool is Benteke. But in a game like this where Liverpool will be confident at home, there are other players that could shine like Henderson or Milner so it might be better to look for the GW2 captain elsewhere.
Sergio Aguero
Aguero is only worth it if he starts which is questionable at this point. My captain pick for last GW was Walcott who only returned 1 point as he didn’t start so I’m not eager to make the same mistake again. In Man City squad another interesting GW2 FPL captain prospect is Sterling. He didn’t impress in first match and a lot of FPL managers decided to offload him, but this could be a good opportunity for him to shine. He has the pace and flair to play well against Chelsea.
Eden Hazard
Hazard had a disappointing game in GW1 and until he shows a clear sign of improvement it is probably better to look elsewhere when deciding on your GW2 captain. Considering that trip to Man City is not a good matchup for the Blues, you are better of staying away from their players anyway.
Theo Walcott
Walcott didn’t start against West Ham which spoiled the day for his owners and especially the ones that captained him, like I did. However that was something we all knew that it could happen. With plenty of talent in Arsenal squad it is not surprising that he was benched. However Wenger needs his pace at Crystal Palace and I expect him to start instead of Giroud in the attack. If that was a certainty he would be first name on my FPL GW2 shortlist, but at this point he is a risky pick. Sanchez was introduced late in the game when Wenger tried to save the day, but he couldn’t make the impact. He might start from the bench again as he could probably use some more time to get ready for the new Premier League season, so I wouldn’t recommend him as your GW2 captain. Other Arsenal players to consider are Ozil, Cazorla and Ramsey but if Walcott starts I would captain him over those three any day.
Mauro Zarate
Brave captain pick in the GW2 would be Mauro Zarate, but he did score against Arsenal and he is safe to start. West Ham plays against Leicester, team that allowed two goals at home against Sunderland. I can’t see them keeping a clean sheet here. West Ham will be filled with confidence after a huge win, and Zarate could score again. Many will choose Payet over him, but I believe he has much more scoring potential whereas Payet could record an assist maybe.
